Teaching a Practice I Live

I’m Lora McKnight, a Vedic Meditation Initiator based in Pittsburgh.

I am also a mother, partner, nonprofit executive, neighbor, and person living a full life with responsibilities, relationships, uncertainties, and demands. I do not practice meditation because I have escaped any of those things. I practice because meditation has changed the way I meet them.

I learned Vedic Meditation in 2021. What began as a personal practice became a foundation for greater presence, resilience, and adaptability in my life. Meditation did not make life stop moving. It gave me more capacity to move with it.

The Point Is Not to Become Good at Meditating

I am not especially interested in helping people become impressive meditators.

The value of meditation is not measured by how quiet your mind becomes, how peaceful you appear, or whether every meditation feels profound. It is revealed in the life you live outside of meditation.

Can you recover more readily when something unexpected happens? Can you respond rather than simply react? Can you remain present for more of your life without being overwhelmed by it? Can greater clarity, creativity, and ease become available to you?

Vedic Meditation gives the mind and body access to deep rest, allowing accumulated stress to be released over time. We meditate so that we can engage more fully with life, not withdraw from it.

Why I Teach

As the practice became more significant in my own life, I felt increasingly drawn to make it available to others.

I completed my Vedic Meditation Initiator Training in the Himalayas in 2025. The training prepared me to teach the technique in the traditional way: through personal instruction, a mantra selected for the individual student, and four consecutive days of in-person learning.

I teach because this is a practical, self-sufficient technique. Once you learn, you do not need an app, a recording, a particular environment, or my constant presence in order to meditate. The practice becomes yours.

At the same time, you do not have to practice alone. Students receive ongoing access to meditation checks, group meditation, Vedic knowledge, advanced instruction, and community after completing the course.

What You Can Expect from Me

My approach is grounded, thoughtful, and human. I take the teaching seriously without expecting students to take on a particular personality, aesthetic, or spiritual identity.

You can expect:

  • Clear instruction without unnecessary mystification

  • Space for honest questions

  • Respect for your individual experience

  • Humor and warmth alongside serious knowledge

  • Ongoing support as your practice develops

You do not need to arrive calm, spiritually accomplished, or certain that meditation will work for you. You only need enough curiosity to learn more.
